Why we replaced daily standups with written updates
Live standups looked aligned on the calendar and felt empty in practice. Here is what changed when we moved status to writing.

The meeting that ate the morning
Our standup was only fifteen minutes. It still cost more. People blocked focus time around it, late joiners restarted context, and blockers often waited until someone remembered to speak up.
What writing fixed
Written updates are timestamped, searchable, and fair across time zones. Managers skim. Teammates reply when they can help. The ritual stays, the theater leaves.
How to try it for one week
- Keep the same three questions.
- Cap each answer at a few sentences.
- Hold one weekly live sync for decisions, not status.
Most teams know within five days whether the quieter rhythm fits.
